Roman Coppola

Roman François Coppola, born on April 22, 1965, is the son of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, but he has carved out his own multifaceted career as a filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay alongside Wes Anderson for *Moonrise Kingdom* (2012). His television series *Mozart in the Jungle* secured the 2016 Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. In 2019, he was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As president of San Francisco’s American Zoetrope and founder of The Directors Bureau, a commercial and music video production company, Coppola has demonstrated wide-ranging influence. He began his directorial work overseeing in-camera visual effects and second unit direction on his father’s *Bram Stoker’s Dracula*, earning a BAFTA nomination for Visual Effects. He continued as second unit director on films by his father, Wes Anderson (*The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou*, *The Darjeeling Limited*), and sister Sofia Coppola (*The Virgin Suicides*, *Marie Antoinette*).

In the 1990s, he became a prominent music video director, helming all four videos for The Strokes’ debut album *Is This It*, plus “12:51” from *Room on Fire*. His work for Phoenix’s “Funky Squaredance” entered the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. His first feature, *CQ*, debuted at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim; his second, *A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III* (2012), received mixed reviews. Beyond film, Coppola is an inventor and entrepreneur behind the Photobubble Company, Pacific Tote Company, and other ventures.
