S1E17 The Judgement

In this episode, the backstory of Henry Garth's departure from the judiciary comes to light. Through flashbacks, we learn of a grim moment when he was compelled to impose the death penalty on a murderer. The convicted man's family, spearheaded by Jake Carewe (Clu Gulager), resorted to threats, coercing the community to pressure the Judge into a reversal. When Henry chose to confront the family's intimidation, he found himself standing alone, devoid of the backing he needed from the townspeople.
