An elderly couple's attempt to extinguish a fire in their old couch leads their young neighbor, Zoe, to call the fire department. Mabel insists on retrieving her pet budgie, and Colin, who has taken a liking to Zoe, steps up to save it. In his efforts to revive the deceased bird, he inadvertently sends it flying through the window using air from his breathing apparatus, leaving Mabel and Zoe to believe it has flown away. Grateful, Zoe sees Colin as a hero, prompting him to ask her out. Meanwhile, the fire engine is dispatched to the Kent countryside, where it gets bogged down in mud but still manages to tackle a barn fire. In the chaos, George tries to save a valuable tractor, only to end up wrecking half the barn. Councillor Sicknote begins hosting surgery sessions in his living room, where Jean, overwhelmed by elderly visitors, grows weary until a drunken Irishman stumbles in, mistaking the gathering for a doctor's office.
