Professor Noel Fitzpatrick cares for a Newfoundland named Billy, who has made countless trips from Aberdeen for leg treatments. He also works to assist Barney, a Yorkshire terrier suffering from a neck deformity that is putting pressure on its spinal cord. For owners Linda and Barry, Noel represents their final hope, but the procedure is fraught with risks and comes with no assurance of a positive outcome.
