William jeopardizes his standing when he goes back to the Bailey to represent James Hadfield, who faces charges of high treason for attempting to assassinate King George III. Meanwhile, he maintains a complicated relationship with Lady Sarah Hill, which leads to his social isolation and financial difficulties. As Sarah navigates her own troubles, she discovers from Southouse that she lacks any rights independent of her husband.
