After becoming the ruler of the universe, Zeus assigned his brother Poseidon the domain of the sea, while Hades received control over the underworld, the realm of the deceased. Isolated in a realm he hadn't selected, Hades governed the shadowy souls and the grotesque beings that inhabited his dark kingdom.
