Beau, the son of Luke Short, returns home, and Granny has her sights set on him marrying Elly May, who isn’t interested at all. Initially, Miss Hathaway attempts to scare Beau by dressing Elly as a glamorous Hollywood starlet, but after a passionate kiss from her, he’s no longer intimidated. Next, she tries a different approach, dressing Elly as a messy scrubwoman to turn him off, but Beau appreciates that she can handle chores. Eventually, Miss Hathaway encourages Beau to embrace a more worldly persona, while Jethro tries to teach him the ways of a playboy. However, Beau's true reason for coming to California is to enlist in the army.
