Ed Balls, the former Labour politician, television presenter, and sequinned Strictly dancer, hails from a family dedicated to improving the world. With his mother Carolyn suffering from dementia and unable to share their family stories, Ed embarks on a quest to uncover his ancestry. His search leads him to Portsmouth, where he learns about his great-great-great-grandfather, William Dunbar, an assistant surgeon associated with HMS Victory. As Ed delves into Dunbar's medical career, he uncovers a troubling history of abuse within a Kent workhouse. Additionally, he discovers a poignant connection to Christopher Green, an agricultural laborer who bravely defended his community in a trial at Norwich Castle.
