In Santa Barbara, California, Kimble works as a sailmaker's apprentice and finds himself smitten with Karen, the daughter of his strict yet kind-hearted employer, Lars Christian. However, Karen's envious and protective brother, Eric, disapproves of their budding romance. When Lars suffers a heart attack, his dying wish is for Kimble to look after Karen. Meanwhile, Gerard travels to Los Angeles after learning about the arrest of a one-armed man for robbery, using the media coverage to try and draw Kimble out of hiding.
