The Great War in Numbers (2017)
S1E1 The March to War
The premiere episode unveils the events leading to the war that erupted in 1914. The years following the last European conflict have seen dramatic shifts; industrialization has generated enormous wealth in Europe and America, but only for a select few. Meanwhile, the empires of Britain, France, Russia, and Germany have expanded their reach globally. The British Empire, the largest in history, governs a quarter of the globe's population. Yet, despite their vast resources, these powers are restless. When a pair of gunshots ring out in Sarajevo during the summer of 1914, assassinating the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and his spouse, it ignites tensions that spiral into a worldwide war, ultimately taking 18 million lives.
