Yotaro, a former small-time crook fresh out of prison, carries one thing with him: the memory of a rakugo performance called "Shinigami" by the master Yurakutei Yakumo. With nothing left to lose, he heads straight to Yakumo's theater and begs to become his apprentice. Accepted into the fold, Yotaro soon discovers that the world of rakugo is full of strange twists. He forms an unexpected bond with Yakumo's ward, Konatsu, all while his own past refuses to stay buried.
