Perley, Almanzo's lazy sibling, arrives in town just as Almanzo's feelings for the younger Laura grow stronger. Charles believes Perley might be a better match for his beloved "Half Pint." However, this opinion shifts dramatically when Perley accidentally hurts one of Almanzo's horses. It becomes evident to Charles that Perley is nothing but a nuisance, while Almanzo demonstrates his maturity and sense of responsibility by tending to the injured horse and nursing it back to health.
