The children adopt a dog from the shelter, believing it will be the ideal gift for Bernie. Meanwhile, Bernie discovers the dog and decides to keep it hidden, thinking it's the best surprise for the kids. Misunderstanding his intentions, the kids assume he returned the dog to the shelter and plot their revenge.
